Anyone into turntablism / scratching / live performances?

Hello! Just curious. If someone is interested and wanna share some knowledge or recommendations.
If you are not familiarized with these, take a look to DJ Brace, Kid Koala, DJ Perly or C2C. Thanks in advance!

Many years ago, i started with turntables. Just pick up another pair as like the feel better then a controller. would love to improve with scratching, juggling, etc.

What are you looking for exactly? If it’s tutorials, check out Rob Swift on youtube. The Beat Junkies “homeroom” series is also really good for practicing.

Hi @anon3682750 no, not looking for tutorials (I need to improve for sure xD), but thanks for sharing! Love Babu & Rob btw :).

I just was curious if someone here is streaming this kind of dj sets.

:v:

Ahh gotcha. I do little bits of turntablism in my sets. I mostly play boombap style hip hop, reggae, dancehall, funk type stuff. I’m not setup to stream here yet though.

I used to be huge into this. I have a gigantic belief that all DJing is an art form but turntablism shows the TT as an actual instrument. I developed a mystery neuro condition in the past decade. Multiple neurologist have classified it as epilepsy for lack of another term but it’s not. My huge issue with it is I have a constant tremor to my body and suffer what they call partial motor seizures which display themselves in forms like a small tick to a huge jerk. It can look like I’m having no issues and I’m lying about this to “omg! Did you see him just flop about?” It’s cause me to drop scratching, beat juggling and a few more tricks. Even using my pitch bend gets frustrating as hell. I can get my mix right on top of each other but with my motor skills compromised I can’t land that final minor adjustment. Sometimes while making it I’ll have a motor seizure and totally over shoot it. I can’t tell you the pain I feel inside because of this. Due to this I rely heavily on sync. I do not look down on sync and not just cause I use it. Even Craze has come out saying that sync has helped him develope new techniques. I do have an issue with people who can’t match a beat with out it. I teach a whole mess of younger gen kids. Showing them phrasing, extreme bpm changes, slow bpm progressions, fast mixing etc. before I got to more than half of them they didn’t know how to beat match. They literally were performing with almost trainwreck like Crossfades trans. When we started they wanted to go right for the sync button but I stopped them and made them realize that the pitch bend is a math tool. Percentages plus or minus. Factor that into your bpm and you have a formula. The greatest tool those is your ears. Sometimes crap happens. Beat grids improperly set or something else. That sync button will fail and you need to be ready. In the end it takes less than half a day to teach beatmatching and there is so much more to a good mix and DJ. I’ve tried scratching with my xdj and I’m getting better but the lack of tactile vinyl makes it odd to me. Not to mention I don’t feel the platter moving underneath. I have been able to hot cur scratch by turning off master tempo, hitting a hot cue that has a sample cued up in it, and manipulating a pitch set open at 50%. Works well, but I have demolished so many pitch bends this way and it just seems costly. On a good day I sieze the chance to use my decks and do some personal scratching in private. But I’m friends with some of the Beatminerz and I follow instas like Crazaroni, mix master mike etc and seeing them do what I used to actually causes me physical pain in my heart. Ending this long comment 2 examples that alway tickle and send chills down my spine is the Skratch Pickle(or Bastid) piece where porn music is used and a woman’s Moan for the sample and they basically scratch a woman slowly reaching climax with a crazy frantic peak. Then he might still have a clip but some Darth vader DJ scratching the imperial march. During the one segment he literally needle drops on tone and makes it seem effortless. :metal:
